La Perouse, Sydney

A nice day trip in Sydney is at La Perouse. Approx 14kms south-east of Sydney CBD, located at the northern headland of Botany Bay and is notable for an old military outpost on Bare Island which was built in 1885. You can do a tour of Bare Island on Sundays only. Bare Island and surrounding parks were used in Tom Cruises Mission : Impossible 2 back in 2000.

You can walk around Bare Island. Populare spot for fisherman and divers/snorkellers and even wedding photos.

Around from Bare Island is Congwong beach. Very clear water, also popular for divers/snorkellers. Can get popular on a warm summers day. There is a walking track which takes you to Little Congwong Beach.

There are a few locals that are hunted, including eel and octopus.

Also at La Perouse there is a reptile show in the afternoons featuring native lizards and snakes. This can be found on the grassy area just before you reach the main carpark at La Perouse on your left hand side.

La Perouse also has a few cafes and restaurants. We went for fish and chips and all agreed it was delicious. You can sit down in the park and watch planes takeoff/landing at Sydney Airport.

Tips

- get here early as by lunchtime it can be difficult to get a parking spot

Costs

- Bare Island tour : $10 per adult, $25 for family (2A+2K). Book at La Perouse Musuem.
