Young is the Cherry Capital of Australia, and this weekend we are going cherry picking.
Day 1 : Saturday
Young is about 3.5 hours drive from Sydney, heading along the Hume Highway to Melbourne, with the turnoff just a few km's past Yass.
We are staying at the Town House Motor Inn which is situated right in the middle of Young. Across the road is McDonalds and KFC and just a hundred metres away from the main road going through the town centre where you can find all the shops, restaurants, pubs, clubs and the cinema. The motor inn is rather old and could do with a refurbishment.
The first thing we do is go to the Visitor's centre where the largest cherries in the world can be found.
We spend Saturday looking around the town, having dinner at the 'Young Services Club'. Later that night we visited the family owned cinema to watch James Bond 'Spectre'.
Day 2 : Sunday
Today we are going to Allambie Orchard for our cherry picking. There are lots of cherry orchards to go picking but we chose this one also becuase they have a cafe.
As you can see, they have plenty of beautiful, delicious cherries.
The oldies are enjoying picking.
And even the young ones are enjoying the picking.
We've picked about 10 kilos of cherries. Plenty to share with the neighbours and friends, and to make cherry jam with.
Before we head home back to Sydney we visited the Lambing Flat Chinese Tribute Gardens. There were many thousands of Chinese people in Young during the gold rush in the 1860's.
It's a very tranquil place to visit.
Tips
- If visitiing the Young Services club for dinner on a Saturday, get in early. They have a meat raffle on Saturday nights, so the dinner tables/chairs were far and few.
- If attending late night movie at the cinema, if they have left over popcorn, they will offer it free during the screening

Town House Motor Inn : 1 room which contains 1 double bed and 1 single bed $120 per night
Allambie Orchards : cherries are $6 per kilo
Lambing Flat Cinese Tribute Garden : Free
Young Cinema : $14 per adult, $12 per child
